(We might call Orwell’s English Socialists “ accelerationsts.”) Newspeak appears not through history or social change but through the will of the Party. In other words, Newspeak isn’t just a set of buzzwords, but the deliberate replacement of one set of words in the language for another. The transition is still in progress in the fictional 1984, but is expected to be completed “by about the year 2050.” Students of history and linguistics will recognize that this is a ludicrously accelerated pace for the complete replacement of one vocabulary and syntax by another. ![]() ![]() It’s clear what his profession is, but when Oriel offers to pay him for fun on the beach, and nothing else, how can he say no?People like him don’t get happy endings with royalty, and while he reciprocates every touch and kiss with all of his heart, he knows it won’t last. ![]() If Oriel has too, he’ll marry Aspen even without his Father’s blessing.Aspen’s time is money, and he’s sure the Crown Prince wouldn’t even look twice at him. ![]() Maybe the homeless guy he spotted can help him out. When he starts to get new feelings that he’s never experienced with anyone else, he knows Aspen is the one for him. So, helpless as she was to move on, she went in search of a book to read while she hung out for a day or so in a roadside hotel. The snow blanketed most of Georgia and even made it’s way into Southern and Central Alabama. It was freakish because she was travelling from South Florida to Middle Tennessee. ![]() While travelling to our home for Christmas she became stranded in a freakish snow storm. He could not sleep, he was permanently hungry and he suffered from dysentery. Allowed one hour’s exercise a day, he walked in single file in the yard with other prisoners but he was not allowed to communicate with them. In total isolation, first in Pentonville and Wandsworth, and then in Reading gaol, to which he was moved in November 1895, Wilde slept on a plank bed with no mattress. Wilde’s misfortune was to serve his sentence just before prison conditions were officially changed by the 1898 Prison Act. I have not exhaustively compared the text of this new edition with the old one, but the majority of the revisions seem to be confined to brief parenthetical clarifications and footnotes. While the cover brands the book as a full-fledged "Revised Edition," I would judge it closer to a straightforward reissue of the original, with the added value of an excellent new introduction by former Strange Horizons columnist Matthew Cheney.
